Biofeedback: Healing Without Drugs

Biofeedback (BF) simply means information - or feedback - about what is going on inside of your body through the use of external instruments. Taking your temperature with a thermometer is a simple form of biofeedback.

BF is scientifically proven to have a powerful positive effect on your emotional and physical well-being by teaching you to alter your brain wave activity, blood pressure, muscle tension, heart rate, respiration rate, and other critical bodily functions, without medications.

BF is an educational process for learning specialized mind/body skills. Through practice, you become familiar with your own body's unique patterns and responses to stress and learn to control them rather than letting them control you.

This is done by practicing and experimenting with different feelings and sensations with the guidance and supervision of a trained professional and the immediate and concrete data provided by the sensitive equipment.

Electromyography (EMG) Feedback is the process of monitoring and displaying the ongoing contraction and relaxation patterns of your skeletal muscles. Chronic muscle tension can be indicative of an ongoing stress response. Feedback plays a major role in improving your awareness of your body's physiological indications of inappropriate stress responses and the mechanisms involved in their generation and maintenance.

Encephalography (EEG) Feedback of Neurofeedback is the process of monitoring and displaying the ongoing brain wave activity to train your brain to self-regulate better. The brain controls the whole body. Health problems are often reflected by the brain in the form of unhealthy or maladaptive brainwave patterns.

Top scientists from UCLA and NASA have learned that by exercising the brainwaves in a healthy pattern, the body can return to a healthy state. As symptoms decrease or disappear, people find their physical and mental health improves.

This technology has been recognized as the "21st century approach to healing without medications." It has been presented on major news programs and talk shows such as 20/20, Oprah and Dr. Phil. It has been identified as "the most effective solution to ADHD" by the journal Opinions in Pediatrics.

Other forms of Peripheral Feedback include the process of monitoring and displaying heart rate, respiration rate, blood pressure, skin temperature, adrenalin release, etc.
