Introduction to Biofeedback

A Basic Introduction to the Science of Biofeedback and the Process of Self-Regulation, this workshop will provide a thorough introduction to the art and science of biofeedback. The goal will be to help newcomers understand basic concepts and principles and assist more experienced practitioners in refreshing the essence of what works in using feedback technology to promote health and well-being.

About Dr. Chartier

In 1983 Dr. Chartier began a private psychotherapy and biofeedback practice, Life Quality Resources, in Raleigh, NC. QEEG assessments and Neurofeedback training became a part of Dr. Chartier’s work in 1989.

In addition to his private practice experience, Dr. Chartier served as a Clinical Associate Professor from 1985 to 1997 in the Department of Psychiatry in the School of Medicine at UNC-CH. In that position he worked for MedWell, the UNC School of Medicine’s Biofeedback and Behavioral Medicine program. He continues to be an annual guest lecturer on biofeedback and neurofeedback for the School of Medicine’s Complementary and Alternative Medicine program.

About Dr. Federholm

Peder Fagerholm, PhD, BCIA-C/BCIA-EEG Certified, is a Clinical Psychophysiologist who has been in private practice since 1996 & is Board Certified in BF & NF.

At times he has worked at Psychological Sciences Institute with Dr. Cantor & at New Mind Neurofeedback Center with Dr. Soutar.

Following his initial training with EEG Spectrum in 1996, he has attended numerous additional trainings with the Stens BF group, Q-Metrx, & at the ISNR, AAPB, & NCBS conferences.

He works with all age groups and conditions which can be appropriately treated by applied psychophysiology. Dr. Fagerholm has a unique background as a foundation for psychophysiology. He has a BS in Industrial Arts Ed (Electronics), a MS in Secondary Ed: Guidance & Counseling, an EdS in Adult Ed Program Management, & a PhD in Vocational Leadership. Additional multidisciplinary studies in psychology, computer based training, and technical education fill out his academic background.

He is an electronic hobbyist (45+ yrs) & an Amateur Radio operator (40 yrs). He was an Asst Chief of Staff, Electronics & Space Warfare Officer for a carrier battle group, retired from the Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer in 2003 (32 yrs) & from IBM in 2004 as a Field Engineer, and has been an Adjunct Associate Professor of Aviation Sciences with Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and of Graduate Studies with Central Michigan University.

About Dr. Klich

Dr. Urszula Klich is a clinical psychologist, speaker, and author who teaches self-regulation to maximize physical and emotional health.  She is a certified meditation teacher in Cognitively-Based Compassion Training (CBCT) through Emory University and has served on various medical teams. She is board certified in biofeedback and is the president of the Southeast Biofeedback and Clinical Neuroscience Association. Her specialized program of Mindfulness-Based Biofeedback (MBB) has been published and widely applied from hospitals to classrooms based on the premise that integrating mindfulness and compassion-informed treatment with psychology fosters individuals’ healing power to improve physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Living mindfully is advantageous and accessible to anyone who recognizes a need for a shift in their life and sets an intention to move forward. She is a sought-after workshop leader and internationally recognized speaker in health and wellness.

Introduction to Neurofeedback

This workshop is for those who are new to neurofeedback (NFB), considering entering the field or incorporating NFB into an existing practice, or looking for a current, research-based NFB refresher. Dr. Richard Soutar will cover the basics, key concepts and skill areas including the theory and methods behind NFB and qEEG, practical applications in clinical settings, basic brain anatomy and assessment procedures, EEG biofeedback software, and basic dimensions of brain maps.

About Dr. Soutar

Richard Soutar, PhD, BCN has published three books on the topic of neurofeedback as well as numerous articles and chapters, and conducted workshops on the various aspects of neurofeedback at conferences and clinics in the U.S and Europe.

As a former professor of psychology and sociology, he has been working continuously over the years as a clinician, director and business administrator of various clinics around the country.

He developed the first internet training course for neurofeedback approved by the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (BCIA).

He has served for many years as Secretary of the Neurofeedback Division of the Association of Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback (AAPB) and has recently served as President.

He is Director of Research and Development for New Mind Technologies where he develops training equipment, brain mapping databases, assessment instruments and software programs for neurofeedback clinicians.
